Tuesday's New Location! & Recipe

Exciting news! For the summer my current Yoga class, held on Tuesday nights @ 7:30, will be returning to Encore Dance Academy in Plainville. We (myself and my students) loved the spacious inviting studio when we were there last year, and I know we will love it again. Guess what else? It's air-conditioned, ahhhh.

Please note that Thursday's 7:45pm Yoga class will continue to be held at the wonderful Villari's Martial Arts Center in Walpole--we love it there too! I hope you'll join us to stay fit and fabulous all summer long!

You can find Encore Dance Academy here:

The "Y" Word

Source: Uploaded by user via Donna on Pinterest

I read a great yoga-related quoted today which gave me a chuckle:

"Blessed are the flexible, for they will not be bent out of shape."

Clearly this quote has a double meaning and I feel that yoga too can have a double meaning in your life. For some yoga is a spiritual practice, for others it is purely a physical practice for improving strength and flexibility, then there are those of us whose approach toward yoga falls somewhere in between. No matter what angle (pardon the pun) you look at yoga from, I believe that it is important to never take things too seriously because that's where the pressure sets in. Putting pressure on oneself to experience yoga in a certain way or to have yoga affect your spiritual, physical, or mental well-being in a specific way seems rather counter-intuitive.

Yoga is not about pressure. Yoga can help you to become more flexible in many aspects of your being but it shouldn't feel like something you have to "get right," because then it becomes very intimidating. It isn't about being perfect at every pose or even about seeking perfection, it is simply the practice of yoga (not the perfection) which can lead to strength, flexibility and yes, even a sense of calm and peace if that's where you want to go with it. Yoga not only makes you more flexible, yoga itself is flexible, it is pliable, you can experience it however you choose.

For some, it is the reputation that comes with the word YOGA that makes the practice seem daunting. If it's the big ol' "Y"-word that has you feeling skittish then just call it stretch. You're not going to a YOGA class you are going to a Stretch class. Stretch...ahhhh...doesn't that sound nice? Soothing, relaxing, the sweet relief of a good stretch after a long stressful day. There, that's better.

Come along and stretch with me, Tuesdays at 7:30pm in Plainville or Thursdays at 7:45pm in Walpole. Check my Yoga and Pilates page by clicking on the navigation bar at the top for more info on locations etc. Remember, the first class is always free!!

Whatcha' Drinkin'?

Source: fitpregnancyandparenting.com via Alison on Pinterest

Yes, it's been hammered into our heads at an exhaustive rate that water is good for us, moreover it is important, even moreover, it is a must to a healthy, vibrant lifestyle. I don't blame you if hearing it one more time evokes an audible Uggg from deep in your belly. I am about to push the fact and even I am sick of hearing about it...but please don't stop reading here, because I have other great-fun-important tidbits to share about other delicious beverages besides the ol' H2O...even our good pal Java.

Let's get the whole water thing out of the way first. Did you know that adequate water consumption can keep you young, help you lose weight and build muscle, is good for your joints, and can even make you smarter? I was surprised by a few those myself. You can learn the details here, if you're interested.

Next up, drink your veggies and fruits. I start almost every day with a glass of green juice. Now don't give me the virtual stink-eye, it might not sound appetizing but I say don't knock it 'til you try it. My fave combo is romaine lettuce, cucumber, broccoli, green apple, and lemon. Mmmm. Sometimes I add a little ginger root as well for better circulation, among other benefits.

Juicing is an excellent way to feed nutrients directly into your bloodstream while giving your digestive system a break. Your body doesn't have to expend so much energy on break down, so the goodness gets quickly to where it needs to go in your beautiful bod. "But what about the fiber?" people often ask that question, my answer is: Yes, of course fiber is very important to our diets, but no one (at least not here) is suggesting that you only take your fruits and veggies in juice form, one should continue to eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, this is just one great way to get them into your system fast and friendly.

Remember, the U.S. recommended standard is to fill half your plate at each meal with fruits and veggies and that still isn't really enough, check out MyPlate.gov Are you getting that many? One way that I make up for that lack is by eating a wonderful product called JuicePlus+, I've had it in my diet for 6 months now and all I can say is, I am converted! JuicePlus+ is backed by over 31 peer reviewed studies that prove that it's contents are bioavailable and reduce oxidative stress. Learn more here.

Another yummy, quick, and easy way to add fruits and veggies to the diet without losing the fiber is through smoothies. I make a smoothie part of my mid-morning routine. You can blend up things like milk/soy milk/almond milk etc with a good protein powder (I use JuicePlus+ Complete) or a couple of tablespoons of  nut-butter, with kale and frozen wild blueberries. This is one of my favorite smoothies and the blueberries totally mask the flavor of the kale--I promise! I even add a bit of ground flax seed for added fiber and a good dose of Omega-3's. My kids love a smoothie as "part of their complete breakfast." For a fun video with a yummy recipe by my healthy minded go-to gal Kris Carr of CrazySexyLife.com go here.

Okay, lastly and as promised: Coffee!!! We all know that too much can be a big no-no, but did you know that new research has found that coffee actually as health benefits that for most people outweigh the risks? This was great news for me because, dang it, I just like it. I don't want to give it up. Okay, I LOVE it.

Apparently coffee is full of antioxidants and other goodness too. Now, I like my Starbucks lattes and Dunkin Donuts iced-hazelnut-with-cream-and-sugar-thank-you-very-much, just like anyone else does. But let's face it, those are dessert coffees and we probably shouldn't be eating dessert for breakfast...plus more for an afternoon pick-me-up. Try to save your dessert coffee for a once in awhile treat, that's what I do now. I try to take the rest of my coffee home-made. Whether you prefer your Keurig, a french-press, or a drip filter coffee machine, find what works for you and find a brand that you adore. Make it at home and even make it a ritual if you like, I am certainly not one to pull a steaming cup of beautiful coffee out of anyone's hands, because I know what the consequences of that scenario could be and it ain't pretty!

If you take your coffee black then you are in luck because you'll get the benefits and none of the fat or sugar, at 2 calories a cup that is a great deal. If you're like me though and you're going for that sweet creamy goodness with your coffee aroma therapy, then just keep track of what you're spilling and spooning into your cup. This is another boon to preparing it at home, you are in control of what goes in. One day I decided to throw the info about what I was putting into my coffee into a calorie calculator, just out of curiosity. I had no idea I was adding so much and that even with only a couple of teaspoons of sugar I was doing my body a ton of bad, so many calories and the cream in the amount I was using? So much fat and calories. Oh boy, time for a change. It took only a little getting used to and I realized that I really needed a lot less than I was previously using in order to enjoy a delicious cup. I cut down to no more than 2 cups a day and I've found it's all I need and I can rest assured that I am getting more of the benefits of coffee than the not-so-pretty possible down-side. So fill'er up, just use wisdom and moderation. The Mayo Clinic has a great little article with more details on the benefits vs. risks of coffee, you can find that here.

Walking in Gratitude

Source: serendipitylulu.blogspot.com.au via Mulberry on Pinterest

After a recent health scare, I have been reminded of the magical effects of practicing true and meaningful gratitude. Experiencing wellness and healing once again, I want to take this time to express heart felt thanks for the support and love of friends, family, and the understanding of my yoga and Pilates students as I have recovered, because without that, the journey would have been much more difficult.

I was thinking today about all of the teachers in my life, which I am so happy and grateful to have because they are such an integral part of my development each day into a better form of myself. Although those who come to my classes are not only counted as friends and as students, they too have become my teachers. I always say that one of the privileges I enjoy as a teacher, is to share a something that I am passionate about, but also to impart my belief that this physical practice has an emotional benefit as well by way of self-acceptance. We can only begin where we are and it is from first accepting that place that we can begin to move forward. When we build a foundation of gratitude, forgiveness, care and acceptance of ourselves just as we are--the good and the perceived "bad"-- true personal growth can begin.

As I am just a small part of helping others to find joy in this journey, through laughing at ourselves in the yogic practice of non-harming (not judging ourselves or others as we may falter in learning a new pose) I am grateful for the ways that I am taught as well. Thank you for teaching me by allowing me to share in your journey and for accepting me as I am, because I feel all the better for it.

I hope to see you in class this week and in the weeks ahead so that we may continue the fun and adventure of it all. Bring a friend and share with them too. Please see the post below for more details on the June promotion.

     With gratitude and warmth,
Namaste

Squeeze A Little Yoga In & Candied Sweet Potato Fries

A few weeks ago, while searching for a quick yoga workout on Yogi Tara Stiles' YouTube channel, I came across a video (see below) of Tara sharing her recipe for Candied Sweet Potato Fries. All I can say is YUM-O! I found these to be a delicious between-meal snack that were plenty filling. The next time I made them I used them as a side to compliment my quinoa, kale, and tofu stir-fry. Give 'em a try, they are delish! As a side note, feel free to play around with the recipe and don't stress if the exact ingredients aren't in your cupboard. I had agave syrup and olive oil on hand, so I swapped them out for the maple syrup and coconut oil. Also check Tara's yoga videos, they are a great way to sneak 10 minutes of mat time into your day.

Sometimes I wish I had a quiet forest sanctuary to which I could escape whenever the stresses of modern life overwhelmed me. The one pictured above seems like it would do the trick, thank you very much. Rather than long for what I don't have, however, my latest efforts have been to practice contentment instead. Niyama (Personal Observances) is the second of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. One element of niyama is Santosa. Translated, santosa means contentment, also known as being happy with what we have. This isn't always easy in practice.

Source: Uploaded by user via James on Pinterest

We want things, we want to be better, feel better, live better, eat better, work better, and we want to do it all faster...better yet, we want it to happen now. Improvement is by no means a bad thing, and why label anything really "bad" anyway? However, when our focus is constantly on the future, on what could-should-or would be better, "if only..." then we are cheating ourselves out of the here and now. We aren't able to enjoy or simply be content with where we currently are and what we currently have; besides in simplest terms isn't what we have something and aren't we at least somewhere? Again, that may seem like an over-simplification, but really isn't what we have and where are worth anything at all? Of course! Are we so ungrateful as to forget how much less we could have (and many others do) or how much worse a place we could be in? I know that I have been hugely guilty of this. The point isn't to be guilty though, the point is simply to become aware. We are never stuck in any mindset, as soon as we are aware of it we have the power to change it.

So here's the problem with waiting for things to be better: the future quite quickly becomes the present (maybe it doesn't always feel like that, but it's true, it happens...eventually always.) Tomorrow is today's future, for goodness sakes. If today we are only focused on ways that tomorrow could be better then today is nothing but a waiting game. When tomorrow comes, will it be better? If it's just about the same as yesterday, will we experience more discontent? Those can be some pretty heavy questions to ask yourself when you really think about it, so just mull it over a bit...that's all that I'm trying to do. I'm letting those questions sit with me awhile, becoming aware, and then I'm figuring out what the heck to do about it. My guess is that no matter what I try, I will probably have to try again and again before it feels really, truly a part of my perception.

Source: piccsy.com via Karen on Pinterest

Trying and then trying again...and then again...and oops- I-slipped-into-my-old-thinking-let-me-try-that-again, is all a part of the process. It's OK. Really. I always tell my yoga students "Begin where you are" because there's really no other place to start from right? You can't start from where you want to be, so start from where you are and re-start as many times as you have to, just don't give up that's all.

Today I am trying to appreciate where I am and what I have. I am not looking ahead or behind. I am working on being content with the now. As I enjoy the now, the rest will fall into place. The best part is that when I get to that other place, the place I've been longing for, I'll smile knowing that many of the days leading up to that moment were not spent waiting and whining, but were spent with contentment. I will find that I didn't have to build a fancy tree house to escape to, because my little Cape with a boat-load of unfinished household projects was a perfectly welcome retreat all on it's own.

That's what I'm going for anyway...practicing contentment. Here's to beginning where we are, enjoying it, feeling it, maybe even LOVING it and seeing where that leads.

Namaste,
Tamar
